Nurse Practitioners are highly qualified health-care professionals with additional education and clinical training that allows them to diagnose, provide treatments plans, order labs and diagnostic imaging, provide both non-pharmacological and pharmacological management if indicated as well as perform small surgical procedures. With a holistic approach to care, NPs help individuals improve their' quality of life by educating communities on preventative health measures including health promotion and disease prevention. They provide management of chronic illness as well as collaborate with multidisciplinary members in the healthcare system regarding researched evidence based practices. NPs are also known as educators or clinical researchers who can be consulted amongst other multi-disciplinary team members.
Becoming a Nurse Practitioner requires dedication and ambition – it takes at least 8 years of education, clinical experience, and rigorous training. To get started on this journey you must hold your Bachelor's Degree in Nursing as well as 2 years of clinical experience. Then the hard work begins - dedicating two more years towards the completion of an extensive Master’s Program which requires both written and clinical testing.
For those unfamiliar with healthcare providers, it is important to note the difference between a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and a doctor. While they may both provide essential care services that ultimately benefit their patients’ health, there are subtle differences in each provider's role. In general practice across Canada and other countries, NP's have come to work alongside doctors as equal members of medical teams in order to deliver high quality healthcare solutions, often providing specialized skillsets or expertise.
Here is a comparison chart to visualize some of the similarities and differences between NPs and Doctors.
*Please note the above comparison chart is designed to highlight comparison roles between both an NP and a physician. This list is not exhaustive of all the roles, and mainly applies to clinicians working within primary care. Roles between NP's and doctors will differ agmonst various specialities.
